Maria Hester Wins Inaugural Foushee Alumni Scholarship
We are very proud to announce that Maria Hester is the inaugural winner of the National High School Ethics Bowl’s Austin Foushee Alumni Scholarship.
Hester is a recent graduate of the School for Creative Studies in Durham, NC, and a competitor in the North Carolina High School Ethics Bowl. Her application essays stood out among over a dozen candidates, and we look forward to welcoming her to the UNC Chapel Hill campus later this Fall! Of the scholarship award and her matriculation to UNC in August, Hester said:
I’m honored to be chosen for this scholarship! I thoroughly enjoyed my time being a participant in the National High School Ethics Bowl program and to represent my school’s team from Durham, NC. I will be attending UNC Chapel Hill this fall with a major in anthropology where I’m excited to continue learning about other people and cultures and of course ethics!
The NHSEB Alumni Scholarship is named for Austin H. Foushee, a 2023 Carolina graduate and incoming 1L at the UNC Law School. After founding an Ethics Bowl team at his high school in rural North Carolina, Austin moved to Chapel Hill, where he worked as the Undergraduate Assistant for the National High School Ethics Bowl while completing a dual degree program in Philosophy and Political Science at UNC. During his time at Carolina, Austin was a Parr Center Ethics Fellow, an event coordinator for the Center’s NHSEBAcademy program, in addition to working as a consulting coach for the NHSEBBridge program, as well as his own high school and others in the area. Austin’s time at the Parr Center has been marked by his creation and supervision of NHSEB’s first Student Advisory Council, as well as his many other lasting contributions to the program. We are thrilled to award a scholarship in his honor, and to celebrate future students who will bring the spirit of the Ethics Bowl activity to our community at Carolina.
