New Paper Considers The Educational Value and Impact of NHSEB

Parr Center Director of Outreach Michael Vazquez and Consulting Research Scientist Michael Prinzing have recently published an open-access article on the educational value and impact of the National High School Ethics Bowl program.

The paper, based on a pilot study conducted with NHSEB students in 2022, is freely available in the most recent issue of The Journal of Philosophy in Schools. Vazquez and Prinzing conclude:

“Social scientific studies have shown us time and again that we are liable to overestimation, closed mindedness, and egoistic reasoning. Preliminary data suggests that Ethics Bowl is an effective and developmentally appropriate intervention for cultivating positive intellectual and civic traits among students. A rigorous understanding of the extent of that impact, and ways pedagogical strategies and extracurricular activities can augment it, would be an invaluable contribution to civic education.”

This paper is part of an ongoing program assessment and research effort underway at the Parr Center for Ethics. Learn more and stay tuned for future opportunities to get involved in research on NHSEB and related programs and pedagogies, here.
