CASE Library
Explore The Issues that Matter.
We excitedly invite you to browse, search, and explore our newly redesigned library of over 300 case studies which render some of the most complex and controversial moral and political issues of our time. These cases were formerly used for official NHSEB competitions at the Regional, Divisional, and National Championship levels. They are freely available for public use under Creative Commons licenses.
The NHSEB Case Library is an excellent tool for competitive preparation, internal or intramural competition, or beyond the context of the Ethics Bowl activity completely—as a classroom resource for Grades 9-12 and beyond.

CRISPR Conundrum
The innovative CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology allows scientists to pinpoint defective genetic material, opening doors to treating illnesses like sickle cell anemia. Another type of gene editing, germline, works on reproductive cells at the embryo level. Germline editing poses the risk of the level of control going as far as creating "designer babies" by selecting for desired traits.
Fake Views
A “deepfake” is a manipulated piece of audio, video, or images using AI to make the alteration as realistic as possible. This technology has beneficial impacts, such as allowing fans to produce content based on films. One such deepfake included Star Wars’ Grand Moff Tarkin, whose actor died in 1991. However, deepfake technology can also be dangerous, as many use it to make politicians, such as Nancy Pelosi or Former President Obama, say or do something that they never did.
AppleScare
Private tech companies have been trying to balance keeping personal devices private and the demands of the government to give them access to phone data. One way that companies have avoided this issue is by using “end-to-end” encryption, where data being sent from one user’s phone to another is unable to be read by the company's server, thus making it impossible to hand over. In the spring of 2021, Apple partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to scan for “Child Sexual Abuse Material” on a user’s hard drive by converting it from a photo to a numerical number.
Family Spies
Location tracking services and apps have become popular among smartphone users. Sasha’s and Jules’ mother uses an app to track their whereabouts. However, for Jules it has become overwhelming to deal with the tracking and all the subsequent questions. Due to this Sasha is now stuck in between their mother and her younger sister Jules, questioning whether these apps are really good or bad. To what extent, if any, do family (or friend) locator apps conflict with their usersâ privacy? If it depends, what does it depend on?
Losing Admission to Harvard
Harvard recently rescinded several students' admission due to their posting inappropriate content on social media. Should students' social media presence play a role in the college admissions process? Should offensive social media use lead to rescinding admission? If so, how should we decide what is offensive enough? And how should the line between public and private social media be drawn?
Blocking the Uninsured from Refueling
In the U.K., closed circuit television will be used to block uninsured motorists from refueling. This technology (automatic number plate recognition) is already used on toll roads. Advocates of this system argue it will benefit those who have accidents with uninsured drivers while critics claim it violates privacy of drivers.
Head Transplant
Medical advancements have made head transplantation surgery seem possible. The body of a brain-dead patient could be attached to the head of those with advanced cancer. Some worry that vulnerable young people could be farmed for their bodies. Is this surgery morally permissible?
Overbearing Mama Bear
Special software allows parents to monitor their children's social media accounts and web searches. Some see this technology as intrusive, while others feel they protect children. Are parental monitoring apps morally permissible?
Frankenburger
Should we support the research and development of synthetic, genetically-engineered meat? It would prevent the killing of animals but hurt the animal farming industry and use animals for research.
Don’t Touch My Phone
There are now apps that allow people to track their friends' locations and intercept their text messages. People have used them to track their cheating spouses and make sure their children are not engaging in objectionable behavior.
Academic Integrity
Many American students think of cheating as a normal, if not acceptable, means to an end. What constitutes cheating- should students be allowed to collaborate on homework assignments? Under what conditions, if any, is cheating morally permissible?
