CASE Library
Explore The Issues that Matter.
We excitedly invite you to browse, search, and explore our newly redesigned library of over 300 case studies which render some of the most complex and controversial moral and political issues of our time. These cases were formerly used for official NHSEB competitions at the Regional, Divisional, and National Championship levels. They are freely available for public use under Creative Commons licenses.
The NHSEB Case Library is an excellent tool for competitive preparation, internal or intramural competition, or beyond the context of the Ethics Bowl activity completely—as a classroom resource for Grades 9-12 and beyond.

An Honest Chat
ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool that uses machine learning algorithms to generate written content. Some argue that it is an efficient and cost-effective solution for producing large quantities of work, useful both for news organizations to generate articles quickly and businesses to save time and resources. However, as automation's prevalence increases, there is a risk that tools like ChatGPT may displace human workers. Others worry who ought to be credited as an author when employing ChatGPT, the spread of misinformation, or even the homogenization of written content. What impacts ought to be considered as we adopt AI technologies?
Penniless Portraiture
Arists Sophie Calle and Vito Acconci and the galleries, collectors, and museums buying their work profit from photographs of people in public spaces. However, the subjects neither have knowledge of their being photographed nor received compensation for the sales. Relatedly, subjects in commercials are used to sell products, whereas background individuals in for-profit news channels are not; in the former, lack of compensation would be considered theft, but the strategy in the latter is typically accepted. Art is often considered distinct from the aforementioned media. Is it ethical for artists and art institutions to profit from work depicting uncompensated subjects?

I’m Afraid
In 2022, Google employee Blake Lemoine publicly suggested that the artificial intelligence program LaMDA (Langauge Model for Dialogue Applications) had become sentient upon its claim that it was "afraid of being turned off." To protect it, Lemoine attempted sought lawyer representation for LaMDA. Some philosophers suggest that, because harming a sentient being is morally high stakes, we ought to be cautious when sentience is known. Others point out that powerful artificial intelligence doesn't require sentience and that a non-human, intelligent labor force might be socially useful. Ought we extend moral consideration to artificial intelligence?
Gun Control
In the wake of many recent mass shootings, gun control has taken center stage in public debate in the United States. Those who advocate much stricter gun control point to the bad effects of the continued availability of so many guns in the U.S. Opponents of gun control often appeal to the right to self-defense to argue for their position. How should a society balance the individual rights of its members to protect themselves with its responsibility to promote public safety, more generally?
Racial and Ethnic Matching in Adoption
In recent years, several controversies have arisen over racial and ethnic matching between parents and children in adoptions. Despite the fact that laws often prohibit such racial and ethnic matching on the grounds that it is discriminatory, supporters of matching continue to argue that adopted children are better off when placed with parents from the same racial or ethnic background. What rights do would-be parents have when it comes to adopting children?

In August 2017, the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, VA turned violent, and sparked controversy over the white nationalist, alt-right, and KKK ideologies that many demonstrators espoused. On social media, photos of the demonstrations were widely circulated and @YesYoureRacist began to gather and release the names of right-wing demonstrators in the photographs using the hashtag #ExposeTheAltRight. The photos, with identifying names and hometowns, were retweeted tens of thousands of times and demonstrators faced real-life consequences.
